Unsteady Heart

Unsteady heart,

bearer and barometer,

I always knew you

somehow flawed,

your timing often off,

your fervor

misplaced,

your unresponsiveness

at times

baffling and

shameful.

Sometimes you felt

too fast for the world,

an aquamarine flash

of a hummingbird.

But then you’d pause

till all went black --

till all collapsed --

returning me

as a fragment.

Unsteady heart,

deliverer

of syncope,

agent of destiny,

only part of

what's left of me

asks for mercy.
